چکیده
Abstract We consider relativistic U(1) gauge theories in 2 + 1 dimensions, with Nb species of complex bosons and Nf species of Dirac fermions at finite temperature. The quantum phase transition between the Higgs and Coulomb phases is described by a conformal field theory (CFT). At large Nb and Nf , but for arbitrary values of the ratio Nb/Nf , we present computations of various critical exponents and universal amplitudes for these CFTs. We make contact with the different spin-liquids, charge-liquids and deconfined critical points of quantum magnets that these field theories describe. We compute physical observables that may be measured in experiments or numerical simulations of insulating and doped quantum magnets.

Entanglement Entropy of 3-d Conformal Gauge Theories with Many Flavors
Three-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) of deconfined gauge fields coupled to gapless flavors of fermionic and bosonic matter describe quantum critical points of condensed matter systems in two spatial dimensions. An important characteristic of these CFTs is the finite part of the entanglement entropy across a circle. The negative of this quantity is equal to the finite part of the fr...
متن کاملQuantum Phase Transitions Beyond the Landau-Ginzburg Paradigm and Supersymmetry
We make connections between studies in the condensed matter literature on quantum phase transitions in square lattice antiferromagnets, and results in the particle theory literature on abelian supersymmetric gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions. In particular, we point out that supersymmetric U(1) gauge theories (with particle content similar, but not identical, to those of theories of doped antife...

– We study the effect of a Chern-Simons (CS) term in the phase structure of two different Abelian gauge theories. For the compact Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory, with the CSterm properly defined, we obtain that for values g = n/2π of the CS coupling with n = ±1,±2, the theory is equivalent to a gas of closed loops with contact interaction, exhibiting a phase transition in the 3dXY universality cla...
متن کاملOn Quantum Descriptions of (non-)abelian Anyons
We elaborate on both eld-theoretic and quantum mechanical descriptions of (non-)Abelian anyons, emphasizing the role of contact interaction terms. Field theoretic contact terms, required for the sake of renormalizability in general, implement the self-adjoint extension of the quantum mechanical Hamiltonian. Condensed matter physics in the world of two spatial dimensions is a rich eld, with many...
متن کاملA jump in our understanding of quantum criticality in metals
The behavior of itinerant fermions at T = 0 at the verge of an instability into a state with either spin or charge order is a fascinating subject which continue to attract a lot of attention from theorists with background in both condensed matter and high energy. At a quantum-critical point (QCP), a scattering by massless bosonic fluctuations of the order parameter destroys fermionic coherence ...
